One of your physicists performed a pretty !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He started out suspended 14m (45 ft) in the air, then had his associates release the rope and let physics take over. Spoiler: he stopped safely as planned.

On a tangentially related note, it amuses me that someone wrote BORK across Sweden on the Oppo map.

There’s an oppo map?

Personally, I think it’s the best part of the Oppo map.

When oil is worth nothing, Norwegians must find thrifty amusements.

What an odd looking structure. Anyone have an idea of what it would have been used for?

Don’t lump me in with the Norwegians. I’m American of Finnish descent. Way different.

Hard to say from the limited views of it. My first guess would be an ore processing building based on the hoppers under it but that could be way off. Maybe tomorrow I’ll fire up Google Earth and see if I can find the building and maybe some better pictures of it.

ttyymmnn is right, it is a structure that is part of the coal mine up at Svalbard.

This is a great program, actually talked about it on the jalopnik tinychat this weekend. Simple physics taken to the extreme, but with precaution so that it still works. He’s also pulled the trigger of a gun facing towards him, while standing in a swimming pool:

And sliding through a fire:

Now we know why Mythbusters ended. They found out about this guy and quit out of shame because they can never be this metal.

I did some digging based on Hoccy’s info. It is located in the town of Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago. The building is part of a system of aerial tramway’s that would transport the coal from the mine to the port. In the picture below you can see the building in question in the background with some of the coal trams still hanging on the tramway. The green building in the foreground is the old power plant.

Very cool stuff, and I can see my productivity is going to be very low for a few days. There are some excellent videos on their channel. I like how the guys running this experiment are horrified that the firefighters are going in to the house. The fire under the foam looks crazy.

I’ve seen the gun under water experiment a few times. Slo-Mo guys and Smarter Every Day did a couple videos on this. Mythbusters also did a show on shooting a gun into water. It is crazy how quickly a bullet loses energy once it hits water. It drives me nuts when movies show people swimming 2-3 meters underwater and bullets zipping by fast enough to hurt them.

That foam video is from the Norwegian Never ever do this at home . The fire is actually inside the foam (which was a mix of hydrogenperoxide, soap and petrol), and ended up igniting the whole house. This fourth season was really good, with making the worlds largest matchstick, making popcorn in a bathtub and cutting firewood with dynamite some of the highlights.
